A Few Reminders Tuesday, December 17th
Reading & Writing:Reading: This week in reading we will learn how to compare characters and story elements. While reading with your child at home, discuss similarities you notice between books you have read. On Friday, we will celebrate two read alouds, Because of Winn-Dixie and Make Way for Dyamonde Daniel. Writing: In writing this week, we will continue our unit on baby essays. We will push our thinking by debating topics. Students will learn to form a claim and support it with reasons. Math & Science:This week in Math and Science we are all about the gingerbread! We will have gingerbread themed math stations and math challenges. We will also have some special science STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) challenges with a gingerbread theme. Students will practice their math skills as well as teamwork and logical thinking skills.
A Few Reminders:Don't forget gingerbread decorating is next week! If you signed up to donate an item please send it with your student as soon as possible. They may place items in the gingerbread boxes in the pod or give them to their homeroom teacher. Reading & WritingReading: This week in reading, we will continue in our "Character Studies" unit. Specifically, we will study character strengths, character change, and the lessons characters learn. We will also discuss why an author might have made certain choices when it comes to a story's elements. At home, continue to encourage your child to read stories with well-developed characters. Ask questions such as, "How did the character change from the beginning to the end of the story?" and "What lesson did the character learn about life?" In addition, please refer to the teal study sheet sent home with your child this week. Our "Character" Test will be on Friday, December 13th. Writing: In writing, we will make final touches to our baby essays and end the week with a fun reflection of all that we have learned. We will put our first and last baby essays side by side and celebrate all that we have learned! Grammar and Conventions: In preparation for our assessment at the end of the week, we will be reviewing various concepts from the last few weeks. We will revisit homophones, compound sentences, precise verbs, and superlative and comparative verbs. Word Study: This week will serve as a review of contractions and prefixes (dis-, un-, pre-, re-, mal-, in-, im-, and mis-). This is useful in science and higher level math. For example, 48 can be written (4 x 10) + (8 x 1). Towards the end of the week, students will participate in guided math stations covering expanded notation, word problems, area and perimeter. Science: In science this week, we are continuing our study of earth science by exploring landslides and review fast changes to earth's surface. We will also study natural resources with a focus on reducing, reusing and recycling.
A Few RemindersMark your calendars! The 3rd grade Winter Program is on Thursday, December 5th. Our performers will sing at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Please send your child in the appropriate attire detailed on the image below. Please note on Friday, December 6, we will be supporting Taylor High School by wearing blue! Reading & WritingReading: This week in reading we will continue to learn about characters. We will study how a character resolves trouble and interacts with secondary characters. At home, read fictional stories with your child. Be on the lookout for the big problem the main character faces and discuss how the character deals with that problem. In addition, identify the supporting characters in the story and their significance in the main character's life. Writing: In writing this week, we will continue to develop our baby literary essay skills. On Friday, we will have our Cold Prompt major grade. Please refer to both the outline and the packet coming home with your child. Completing the homework will help your child come to school prepared to write the best possible essay! View the essay below as an additional resource as you are practicing at home. Grammar & Conventions: This week we will study superlatives and comparatives. Word Study: This week we will be learning how to take two words and combine them into a contraction. Math & Science:Math: This week in math we will study perimeter, which is the distance around a shape. Students will explore how to find the perimeter and also how to solve for the length of a missing side. We will also learn how to use a ruler and measure in inches and centimeters. Science: In science this week we are exploring fast changes to earth's surface. These include volcanoes, earthquakes and landslides. We will have a couple of hands-on learning experiences as we learn about these amazing forces of nature!
A Few Reminders:Open House Please join us for our "Open House" on Tuesday, November 19th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. We would love for you to take a look at some of your child's hard work from throughout the year! Classrooms are open from 5:30 until 6:30. During this time, you can also shop at our "Book Fair" in the Pattison library or grab something to eat from a food truck! Reading & WritingReading: In reading this week, we will continue our "Character Studies" unit. We will practice noticing patterns in our characters' behavior and ask why our characters might be acting that way. We will also use what we know about our characters to predict how they might act in certain situations. Finally, we will set goals for ourselves as readers and learn to track a a character along a story mountain. Writing: In writing class, we will continue drafting baby literary essays with new claims. Specifically, we will collaborate with partners to come up with claims about character traits, character change, and the lessons characters learn. We will then discuss how to best support our claims with strong evidence. We will also be studying various baby literary essays, or mentor texts, in search of ways to strengthen our own essays. Word Study: This week, we will learn about the meanings and usage of suffixes "un-," "mis-," and "mal-." Grammar and Conventions: We will study how to use precise verbs and verb phrases in our writing. Math & ScienceMath: This week in math we will begin learning how to multiply 2 digit by 1 digit numbers. Students will learn how to solve these problems in multiple ways. Your child will learn the base ten model approach, partial product, and standard algorithm. Students will practice these approaches throughout the week during our guided math stations! Test Corrections: During our warm up time students will have the opportunity to reflect on their multiplication and division test from last Friday. Your child will be able to resolve any missed problems. The test will be sent home in Tuesday folders on December 3rd! At Home: Please continue to practice multiplication facts with your child! This is important when solving various multiplication and division problems. We have learned the following facts in class : X0, X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X10. Science: This week in science we will begin our discussion on how slow changes affect the earth. Your child will learn all about weathering, erosion, and deposition and how these process produce soil. You child will participate in a hands-on experiment that will help to better understand these three processes and how they are connected.
Mother Son Game Night Tuesday November 12th 5:30-7:30 Reading: This week in reading we will begin our new reading unit, Character Studies! We will begin our unit noticing what our characters do and say and asking ourselves "What do these words and actions tell me about this character?" We will also begin a new read aloud, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. At home, read fiction books with your child. When a character speaks and talks ask your child what this makes them think about the character's traits or feelings. Writing: This week in writing we will begin our Baby Literary Essay unit. Your child will practice making a big, bold claim about a book read in class. They will then learn to support their ideas with evidence from the text. During the first part of our unit, we will be writing about our character, Sassy, from Dancing in The Wings. At home, practice forming opinions about characters while reading books. Then, practice going back in the text to find specific evidence that proves that opinion. Word Study: In word study we will continue our study of prefixes. The prefixes we will learn about this week are im-,in-,non-, and dis-. Grammar: In Grammar and Conventions this week, we will learn how to use descriptive language in our writing. Math & ScienceMath: This week in math, students will continue building their skills in multiplication and division. We will learn and practice how to solve multi step word problems. These are problems that require two operations (for example, addition and multiplication) to solve. We will also have two days of guided math stations to practice multiplication and division skills before our test on Friday. We have sent home a review sheet for the upcoming test. You can help your student by checking in with them to see how they are doing on their multiplication and division. Encourage them to ask their teachers if they are confused on any concepts. We will be doing a fun review activity this week as well. At home, you can help your students learn their multiplication facts. We have covered the “times tables” for x0, x1, x2, x3, x4, x5, x10. There are many apps and websites out there to help students practice, as well as the tried and true flash cards. Science: In science, we continue to “dig” into the subject of soil. Students are learning about the layers of soil, how soil is formed and why it is an important natural resource. This week, they begin a big project to reflect what they are learning about soil, land forms and earth changes. Look for it at our upcoming Open House. Writing: This week in writing we will take our informational books that we have been working on in class and transform them into creative writing projects. Your child might chose to create a poster, magazine article, or brochure. Word Study: This week, we will begin our study on prefixes. We will learn about the prefixes re- and pre-. Grammar and Conventions: In grammar and conventions this week, we will review for our assessment on Friday. This assessment will cover compound sentences and homophones. To review at home, have your child practice combining two sentences with a comma and conjunction. They will also need to know how to complete a compound sentence using the best coordinating conjunction. In addition, they will need to know how to determine which homophone belongs in each sentence. A Few Reminders:Gifted and Talented Screening Deadline October 30th for grades 1-4 In the Tuesday take-home folder on October 8, there was a letter explaining that it is time for the annual screening for Challenge (gifted and talented program). Parent Checklists for parents who wish to refer their child in grades 1-4 for Gifted and Talented (Challenge) screening for Challenge for the 2020-2021 school year are due by Wednesday, October 30, 2019, to the Challenge teacher. An Elementary Parent checklist can be picked up at the school front office or can be downloaded from the Katy ISD website at http://www.katyisd.org/dept/GT/Documents/Parent%20Check%20List%20Elementary%20-%20English.pdf Field Day: Third grade Field Day will be Wednesday, October 30th, from 8:45-10:30. Please send your child to school in their Field Day shirt. They will also need a water bottle and tennis shoes. Parents may attend Field Day but will need a government issued ID ready as you enter through the back gate. Reading & WritingReading: In reading this week, we will continue reading narrative nonfiction. We will practice summarizing the most important information from these types of texts, and ask ourselves, "Why is this person noteworthy?" We will also revisit how and when to tackle words that complicate understanding. Finally, we will learn to look for both information about a topic and information about a character while reading narrative nonfiction. At home, encourage your child to read narrative nonfiction, or biographies. As your child reads, ask, "What does this seem to be famous for?", "What tricky words to do you see? Is it important to stop and try to figure out this word, or should I keep reading?", "What information are you learning about a topic?", and "What information are you learning about the character?" Writing: As we continue writing our informational books, we will practice deciding on an audience and clarifying any confusing parts in our chapters. We will also learn to choose effective text features in support of our facts. At the end of the week, we will learn to group like information into paragraphs. At home, encourage your child to draft an informational piece on Field Day. They may do this orally and/or write it down. In the draft, some possible paragraphs to include might be:
On Tuesday, October 29th, we will have our Informational Writing Test. Please study the pink review sheet sent home last week. Word Study: We will have our Word Study Assessment this Friday, November 1st. This assessment will cover VCE syllables and vowel teams. Please use the "Word Study Review" homework to study. Grammar and Conventions: This week in Grammar and Conventions we will work on finding and using persuasive language. As writers, we will work on using sentences that show our opinion and convince our reader to think or act in a certain way. Math & ScienceMath: In math this week we will be starting our new unit on division. Your child will learn the various parts of a division sentence: Dividend (biggest/greatest number) / Divisor (number of groups) = Quotient (how many in each group). We will be learning various strategies that will help your child solve division problems. These strategies include: Equal groups, repeated subtraction, number line and array. Be on the look out for the Division strategy handout where you can see examples of these strategies. At home: Please continue to encourage your child to practice their multiplication facts. You can find the facts that we have learned in your child's math notebook behind the fluency tab. Practicing these facts at home will help them when solving various multiplication and division problems. The facts that we have learned are the following: X0,X1,X2,X4,X5,X10. Test: The multiplication Test that was administered on Friday, October 25th will be sent home on Tuesday, November 5th. Your child will have the opportunity to reflect over their test and work on any problems they missed during our ELT time.

We will also learn to identify and understand the importance of various text structures in our expository texts. We will end the week by discussing the best components of an expository text summary. At home, you can help your child by reading a expository text and deciding on the author's opinion about the topic. In order to distinguish an author's opinion, be on the lookout for specific punctuation and strong/descriptive words. Use the text structures anchor chart below to help guide your child's reading. Finally, end your reading by summarizing the text's most important information. Our Expository Reading Test will be on Wednesday, October 23rd. Writing: As we continue writing our informational books, we will learn to research and incorporate facts into our chapters. We will also practice crafting powerful introductions and conclusions that hook our readers and leave them wanting more! At home, and while reading expository text, pay close attention to the beginning (introduction) and end (conclusion) of the book. Notice what the author seems to include and have a conversation about how it hooks you as a reader. Word Study: This week, we will study diphthongs. Diphthongs are two letters that make one sound. At home, practice by calling out words that use these types of sounds and encourage your child to spell them correctly. Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will be learning about compound sentences. Math & ScienceMath: We are continuing our study of multiplication this week, and students will be adding some more strategies to their toolbox. We will be looking at how to use tables to solve multiplication problems as well as how to solve problems involving data in tables. We will have a couple days of math stations for the students to practice and perfect their skills before the Multiplication test on Friday, October 25. Your student should have brought home a review sheet last week that will help them prepare for the test. The multiplication review is due back Wednesday, October 23rd.

Reading and WritingReading: As we continue this week in our "Reading to Learn" unit, we will explore what it means to revise a text's main idea and learn to grow and connect ideas across different texts. We will also discuss the power of choosing to read nonfiction with fascination and excitement. Finally, we will strengthen our in-class reading partnerships by learning to read with an impending conversation in mind. At home, you can help your child by reading engaging nonfiction texts. Encourage your child to read as if every fact is fascinating, and hold them accountable by having a conversation about the reading afterwards. Along the way, support our in-class discussion of main idea by asking your child, "What was this part mostly about?" and "What details support this idea?" Writing: This week in writing, we will continue drafting the chapters of our informational books. We will learn tips for how to organize our facts in a logical way and learn to study our mentor text, Deadliest Animals, in hopes of finding powerful elaboration strategies. We will also practice connecting our chapters with transitional sentences and phrases. By the end of the week, we will discuss how to make sure that our chapters include a healthy balance of both facts and ideas. When working with your child at home, practice noticing and discussing the various writing techniques of informational texts. In class, we imitate much of what we read and it makes our writing that much stronger! Word Study: In word study this week, we will focus on vowel teams and digraphs. Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will learn about both imperative sentences and "you" used in sentences. Math & Science
Science: In science this week, we are studying forces and motion. We are looking at the forces in the world around us; identifying how gravity and friction affect our lives. We also explore surfaces that have more friction (rough surfaces) or less friction (smooth surfaces). Lastly, your student will learn how forces can start a motion, change the direction of a motion, or stop a motion.
A Few Reminders:FIELD DAY IS COMING! Our field day will be Wednesday, October 30th from 9:00-11:30 a.m. Please click the link below to volunteer! Reading & WritingReading: This week, we will kick off our nonfiction unit by revving up our minds and preparing ourselves for reading nonfiction texts. We will practice previewing text features and understanding how they help us as readers. We will also practice pausing after a text to create little summaries to help us remember important information. We will end the week by discussing main ideas and practicing teaching others about what we've read. At home, please have your child read nonfiction texts paying close attention to the text features. You may ask questions like, "How does this text feature help you as a reader?" "What is the author trying to teach you?" "What do you think this book is going to be about?" Writing: This week in writing, we are beginning our informational writing unit. We will start by choosing a topic that is close to our heart. We will fast draft everything we know about our topic and move into trying out different organizational structures. For example instead of simply listing fact after fact, we will experiment by presenting our information through the four text structures (boxes and bullets, compare and contrast, pros and cons, and cause and effect). Science: This week in science we will be wrapping up our unit on Energy with a test on Tuesday. Students will want to bring home their notebooks to study, and to learn the vocabulary words on the lavender review sheet glued into the science notebook. The four forms of Energy we studied were Mechanical, Light, Sound and Thermal (Heat). They should be able to recognize and identify each of these. On Wednesday, we will start to learn about Force and Motion. Our first lessons will be on recognizing Push and Pull forces. We know the students will enjoy the demonstration we have planned for Wednesday!
