A Few Reminders:FIELD DAY IS COMING! Our field day will be Wednesday, October 30th from 9:00-11:30 a.m. Please click the link below to volunteer! Reading & WritingReading: This week, we will kick off our nonfiction unit by revving up our minds and preparing ourselves for reading nonfiction texts. We will practice previewing text features and understanding how they help us as readers. We will also practice pausing after a text to create little summaries to help us remember important information. We will end the week by discussing main ideas and practicing teaching others about what we've read. At home, please have your child read nonfiction texts paying close attention to the text features. You may ask questions like, "How does this text feature help you as a reader?" "What is the author trying to teach you?" "What do you think this book is going to be about?" Writing: This week in writing, we are beginning our informational writing unit. We will start by choosing a topic that is close to our heart. We will fast draft everything we know about our topic and move into trying out different organizational structures. For example instead of simply listing fact after fact, we will experiment by presenting our information through the four text structures (boxes and bullets, compare and contrast, pros and cons, and cause and effect). Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will practice using correct homophones in sentences and correctly capitalizing proper nouns. Click on the videos below for a review on these concepts! Homophones Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnjke7WERu0 Capitalization Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtSu_QTX8JQ Word Study: This week, we will learn about VCe syllables. Math & Science
Science: This week in science we will be wrapping up our unit on Energy with a test on Tuesday. Students will want to bring home their notebooks to study, and to learn the vocabulary words on the lavender review sheet glued into the science notebook. The four forms of Energy we studied were Mechanical, Light, Sound and Thermal (Heat). They should be able to recognize and identify each of these. On Wednesday, we will start to learn about Force and Motion. Our first lessons will be on recognizing Push and Pull forces. We know the students will enjoy the demonstration we have planned for Wednesday!
