A Few Reminders:Open House Please join us for our "Open House" on Tuesday, November 19th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. We would love for you to take a look at some of your child's hard work from throughout the year! Classrooms are open from 5:30 until 6:30. During this time, you can also shop at our "Book Fair" in the Pattison library or grab something to eat from a food truck! Reading & WritingReading: In reading this week, we will continue our "Character Studies" unit. We will practice noticing patterns in our characters' behavior and ask why our characters might be acting that way. We will also use what we know about our characters to predict how they might act in certain situations. Finally, we will set goals for ourselves as readers and learn to track a a character along a story mountain. Writing: In writing class, we will continue drafting baby literary essays with new claims. Specifically, we will collaborate with partners to come up with claims about character traits, character change, and the lessons characters learn. We will then discuss how to best support our claims with strong evidence. We will also be studying various baby literary essays, or mentor texts, in search of ways to strengthen our own essays. Word Study: This week, we will learn about the meanings and usage of suffixes "un-," "mis-," and "mal-." Grammar and Conventions: We will study how to use precise verbs and verb phrases in our writing. Math & ScienceMath: This week in math we will begin learning how to multiply 2 digit by 1 digit numbers. Students will learn how to solve these problems in multiple ways. Your child will learn the base ten model approach, partial product, and standard algorithm. Students will practice these approaches throughout the week during our guided math stations! Test Corrections: During our warm up time students will have the opportunity to reflect on their multiplication and division test from last Friday. Your child will be able to resolve any missed problems. The test will be sent home in Tuesday folders on December 3rd! At Home: Please continue to practice multiplication facts with your child! This is important when solving various multiplication and division problems. We have learned the following facts in class : X0, X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X10. Science: This week in science we will begin our discussion on how slow changes affect the earth. Your child will learn all about weathering, erosion, and deposition and how these process produce soil. You child will participate in a hands-on experiment that will help to better understand these three processes and how they are connected.
