We will also practice a new way of drafting stories as we relive specific experiences important in our lives. This will make our writing intense and real. We will have our Personal Narrative timed writing test on Tuesday, September 24th. Please study the review sheet that was sent home! Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will discuss using an editing checklist. Word Study: This week, we will continue our study of syllables. We will focus on open syllables. MathThis week in math we will be working on addition and subtraction within word problems. Your child will practice solving one and two step word problems as well as be able to identify what operation to use when solving these word problems. When solving word problems your child will be able to comprehend if the problems is building up to find a total (addition) or breaking down into smaller parts (subtraction). Homework: Our Addition, Subtraction, and Sounding Test Review was sent home Monday and will be due Friday, September 27th. Please make sure that your child is reviewing these concepts and using their math notebook in order to help them solve problems. Fluency: Please encourage your child to study the following multiplication facts. X2, X10, X1, X0. You can find these facts in your student’s math notebook behind the fluency tab. We will continue to work on these facts at school as well during our fluency time! Science
A Few Reminders:Reading & WritingReading: This week in reading, we will learn how readers use their grit to persevere even when reading might get tough! We will also learn several strategies for understanding the vocabulary in our books. Finally, we will explore various types of figurative language. At home, start building a personal dictionary of tricky words your child comes across. On Wednesday, we will transform our classroom into a "Starbooks Cafe"! This is a surprise! If you'd like to donate some of the materials to make this transformation possible, please visit the Sign Up Genius below. Writing: This week in writing, we will learn about how to stretch out the most emotional part of our personal narratives. We call this the heart of our stories. We will also practice forming paragraphs, revising our narrative endings, and revising and editing before publishing. At home, we recommend that your child journal important moments from their life. Word Study: This week, we will review spelling patterns related to open and closed syllables. Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will be learning about how to punctuate dialogue in our writing. MathThis week in math we will be continuing our discussion on rounding both to the nearest tens and nearest hundreds place. Your child will begin to take their rounding skills and apply them to solving rounding word problems. Later in the week we will be reviewing addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. Your child will participate in activities to enhance their knowledge of solving addition and subtraction problems. Please begin practicing your X2 multiplication facts with your child! See video below to watch skip counting by twos! Place Value Test: Your child is currently reviewing their place value test and working on test corrections in order to help reinforce tested concepts. Students' place value test will be sent home in Tuesday folders on September 24th! ScienceThis week in science we will wrapping up our unit on Matter by discussing what mixtures are and how we use them in our daily lives!
Please make sure your child is reviewing for the Matter test that will be on Wednesday, September 18th. Students will need to look at the yellow (or green) Matter test study guide that is glued in their science notebook (shown below). A Few Reminders:STEAM Field Trip: Wednesday, September 11th We are looking forward to an exciting day full of hands-on learning! Please send your child to school with a sack lunch. They will also need to be sure to wear their classes t-shirt color. Reading & Writing:Reading: This week in reading, we will learn how to make predictions while reading our just right books. We will then learn to predict not only what will happen next but also how it will happen. Lastly, we will learn the importance of discussing and sharing our reading with our reading partner. To help your child at home this week, ask them to predict what the character in the book they are reading will do next and how they will do it. Also, encourage your child to have quality conversations about books with you at home and with their reading partner at school. Writing: This week in writing, we will work on drafting our stories quickly to get all of our thoughts down on paper. Then, we will study the work of other authors to revise our writing and add in descriptive details and powerful verbs. We will also learn to find the most important part of our story, the part that tells the reader why our stories matter, and stretch it out building suspense for our reader. To help your child at home, have them practice storytelling out loud and challenge them to add more details to their story each time they retell it. Our first writing test will be on Thursday, September 12th! Word Study: This week, we will review the concepts we have learned so far. We will have our Word Study Assessment on Friday. You can help your child prepare for the assessment by completing the review that was sent home Friday (9/6). Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will focus on using adjectives and adverbs in our writing. Math & Science:
Science: The highlight of the week will be the field trip to the STEAM center. Your students will come home on Wednesday bursting with all the amazing things they got to work with. In our classes, we are continuing our labs on the properties of matter (mass, magnetism, temperature and sink/float). Later in the week, we will do another lab to demonstrate how the addition (or loss) of heat makes matter change its state. In other words, solids become liquids, or liquids become gasses. We will also be sending home a review sheet for our science test scheduled on Wednesday, September 18.
