We sent home a detailed letter attached to a permission slip and media release form. The detailed letter will tell you all about the field trip and what your child needs to wear and bring. Both the permission slip and $3 are due Friday, September Reading & Writing:
Writing: We will begin this week with talking about how writers use many strategies to help spell words as they write. This can be strategies they have learned in school or have made up on their own. Next, we will learn that writers rehearse their stories by either drawing a quick sketch for our stories, scene by scene, or retelling their stories to their partner. Rehearsing your writing in these ways helps gather ideas in the story or understand where to add extra detail. Word Study: This week, we will focus on recognizing and understanding abbreviations. Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will focus on verb tenses in our writing. Specifically, we will discuss how to differentiate between the past, present or the future. Math & ScienceMath: Last week your students brought home a blue Test Review Sheet. This is homework that is due on Wednesday, Sep. 4. We are having a test over Place Value and Comparing Numbers on Friday, Sep. 6. Tuesday and Wednesday we will be having Guided Math Stations to strengthen and reinforce their skills in these areas. Please encourage your student to bring their math notebook home next week in order to study (but bring it back to school each day). Science: This week we will be exploring properties of matter with a series of labs about magnetism, mass, sink/float (buoyancy) and temperature. Students will learn about these properties with hands-on experiments. You can reinforce their learning by asking them which property they think is the most interesting.
On September 11, the third grade class will be going on a field trip to the Katy ISD STEAM Center for a day of science labs and experiments. Students will also review how to compose and decompose numbers, which helps reinforce their numeracy (or number sense). Your students will bring home a test review sheet on Thursday, which will be due on Wednesday, September 4. They will be having a test over place value and comparing numbers on Friday, September 6. DreamBox: Third grade students will be using DreamBox again this year. As you remember, DreamBox is a math practice app that both reinforces and builds skills. The program can determine where each user needs additional practice and customizes the interface for the user. In addition, teachers can and will assign lessons on DreamBox that tie into classroom work. To maximize student use at school, we are asking that each student bring a pair of headphones that they can leave at school. Inexpensive wired earbuds can be found online or at local ‘dollar’ stores. Please no wireless headphones! Science: We had a great time in science last week, including saving Fred the Worm from drowning. (Good teamwork skills in all of our classes!) Next week we will be continuing our study of Matter by exploring in depth the three phases of matter: solid, liquid and gas. See if your student can show you one example of each! A Few Reminders:Please remember that are still no lunch visitors this week! If you would like to donate to our third grade wish list, please visit the link below!
