A Few Reminders If you want to practice for the Third Grade Winter Musical, please visit the link below! https://pattison-music.weebly.com/3rd-grade-program.html Please join us on Wednesday, November 6th for our Spirit Night at Cane's on Mason from 4:00pm-10:00pm. We look forward to seeing you there! Reading & WritingReading: This week in reading we will begin learning to find the lessons our biography subjects learn. We do this by asking the following questions as we read:
Writing: This week in writing we will take our informational books that we have been working on in class and transform them into creative writing projects. Your child might chose to create a poster, magazine article, or brochure. Word Study: This week, we will begin our study on prefixes. We will learn about the prefixes re- and pre-. Grammar and Conventions: In grammar and conventions this week, we will review for our assessment on Friday. This assessment will cover compound sentences and homophones. To review at home, have your child practice combining two sentences with a comma and conjunction. They will also need to know how to complete a compound sentence using the best coordinating conjunction. In addition, they will need to know how to determine which homophone belongs in each sentence. A Few Reminders:Gifted and Talented Screening Deadline October 30th for grades 1-4 In the Tuesday take-home folder on October 8, there was a letter explaining that it is time for the annual screening for Challenge (gifted and talented program). Parent Checklists for parents who wish to refer their child in grades 1-4 for Gifted and Talented (Challenge) screening for Challenge for the 2020-2021 school year are due by Wednesday, October 30, 2019, to the Challenge teacher. An Elementary Parent checklist can be picked up at the school front office or can be downloaded from the Katy ISD website at http://www.katyisd.org/dept/GT/Documents/Parent%20Check%20List%20Elementary%20-%20English.pdf Field Day: Third grade Field Day will be Wednesday, October 30th, from 8:45-10:30. Please send your child to school in their Field Day shirt. They will also need a water bottle and tennis shoes. Parents may attend Field Day but will need a government issued ID ready as you enter through the back gate. Reading & WritingReading: In reading this week, we will continue reading narrative nonfiction. We will practice summarizing the most important information from these types of texts, and ask ourselves, "Why is this person noteworthy?" We will also revisit how and when to tackle words that complicate understanding. Finally, we will learn to look for both information about a topic and information about a character while reading narrative nonfiction. At home, encourage your child to read narrative nonfiction, or biographies. As your child reads, ask, "What does this seem to be famous for?", "What tricky words to do you see? Is it important to stop and try to figure out this word, or should I keep reading?", "What information are you learning about a topic?", and "What information are you learning about the character?" Writing: As we continue writing our informational books, we will practice deciding on an audience and clarifying any confusing parts in our chapters. We will also learn to choose effective text features in support of our facts. At the end of the week, we will learn to group like information into paragraphs. At home, encourage your child to draft an informational piece on Field Day. They may do this orally and/or write it down. In the draft, some possible paragraphs to include might be:
On Tuesday, October 29th, we will have our Informational Writing Test. Please study the pink review sheet sent home last week. Word Study: We will have our Word Study Assessment this Friday, November 1st. This assessment will cover VCE syllables and vowel teams. Please use the "Word Study Review" homework to study. Grammar and Conventions: This week in Grammar and Conventions we will work on finding and using persuasive language. As writers, we will work on using sentences that show our opinion and convince our reader to think or act in a certain way. Math & ScienceMath: In math this week we will be starting our new unit on division. Your child will learn the various parts of a division sentence: Dividend (biggest/greatest number) / Divisor (number of groups) = Quotient (how many in each group). We will be learning various strategies that will help your child solve division problems. These strategies include: Equal groups, repeated subtraction, number line and array. Be on the look out for the Division strategy handout where you can see examples of these strategies. At home: Please continue to encourage your child to practice their multiplication facts. You can find the facts that we have learned in your child's math notebook behind the fluency tab. Practicing these facts at home will help them when solving various multiplication and division problems. The facts that we have learned are the following: X0,X1,X2,X4,X5,X10. Test: The multiplication Test that was administered on Friday, October 25th will be sent home on Tuesday, November 5th. Your child will have the opportunity to reflect over their test and work on any problems they missed during our ELT time.
A Few Reminders:Gifted and Talented Screening Deadline for Grades 1-4 Important: Deadline much earlier this year In the Tuesday take-home folder on October 8, there was a letter explaining that it is time for the annual screening for Challenge (gifted and talented program). Parent Checklists for parents who wish to refer their child in grades 1-4 for Gifted and Talented (Challenge) screening for Challenge for the 2020-2021 school year are due by Wednesday, October 30, 2019, to the Challenge teacher. An Elementary Parent checklist can be picked up at the school front office or can be downloaded from the Katy ISD website at http://www.katyisd.org/dept/GT/Documents/Parent%20Check%20List%20Elementary%20-%20English.pdf Next week is Red Ribbon Week! Look below to participate in the daily dress up themes! Monday- wear red Tuesday- wear crazy socks Wednesday- wear sunglasses Thursday- wear a hat Friday- wear a superhero shirt Reading & WritingReading: In reading this week, we will begin by analyzing an author's opinion about an expository topic and deciding whether or not we agree. We will also learn to identify and understand the importance of various text structures in our expository texts. We will end the week by discussing the best components of an expository text summary. At home, you can help your child by reading a expository text and deciding on the author's opinion about the topic. In order to distinguish an author's opinion, be on the lookout for specific punctuation and strong/descriptive words. Use the text structures anchor chart below to help guide your child's reading. Finally, end your reading by summarizing the text's most important information. Our Expository Reading Test will be on Wednesday, October 23rd. Writing: As we continue writing our informational books, we will learn to research and incorporate facts into our chapters. We will also practice crafting powerful introductions and conclusions that hook our readers and leave them wanting more! At home, and while reading expository text, pay close attention to the beginning (introduction) and end (conclusion) of the book. Notice what the author seems to include and have a conversation about how it hooks you as a reader. Word Study: This week, we will study diphthongs. Diphthongs are two letters that make one sound. At home, practice by calling out words that use these types of sounds and encourage your child to spell them correctly. Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will be learning about compound sentences. Math & ScienceMath: We are continuing our study of multiplication this week, and students will be adding some more strategies to their toolbox. We will be looking at how to use tables to solve multiplication problems as well as how to solve problems involving data in tables. We will have a couple days of math stations for the students to practice and perfect their skills before the Multiplication test on Friday, October 25. Your student should have brought home a review sheet last week that will help them prepare for the test. The multiplication review is due back Wednesday, October 23rd.
In Fluency, we learned the X4 facts last week. At home, your student should be able to practice X0, X1, X2, X4, X5 and X10. If you would like to nominate your child for the Gifted and Talented program, please click on the file below. All nominations are due on October 20th.
Portrait retakes and absentees will be taken for Pattison Elementary on Wednesday, October 16th! Additional flyers are available in the front office and attached. You may also visit Provine Website to prepay for your package online. Please have your student dressed in their best for their fall retake photo. If you previously purchased a package and would like your photo retaken, ALL purchased items must be returned to the photographer the day of pictures in order for us to place an order for your child's new photo. Please call Provine at 713-528-1059 with any questions or requests for additional information. Reading and WritingReading: As we continue this week in our "Reading to Learn" unit, we will explore what it means to revise a text's main idea and learn to grow and connect ideas across different texts. We will also discuss the power of choosing to read nonfiction with fascination and excitement. Finally, we will strengthen our in-class reading partnerships by learning to read with an impending conversation in mind. At home, you can help your child by reading engaging nonfiction texts. Encourage your child to read as if every fact is fascinating, and hold them accountable by having a conversation about the reading afterwards. Along the way, support our in-class discussion of main idea by asking your child, "What was this part mostly about?" and "What details support this idea?" Writing: This week in writing, we will continue drafting the chapters of our informational books. We will learn tips for how to organize our facts in a logical way and learn to study our mentor text, Deadliest Animals, in hopes of finding powerful elaboration strategies. We will also practice connecting our chapters with transitional sentences and phrases. By the end of the week, we will discuss how to make sure that our chapters include a healthy balance of both facts and ideas. When working with your child at home, practice noticing and discussing the various writing techniques of informational texts. In class, we imitate much of what we read and it makes our writing that much stronger! Word Study: In word study this week, we will focus on vowel teams and digraphs. Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will learn about both imperative sentences and "you" used in sentences. Math & Science
Science: In science this week, we are studying forces and motion. We are looking at the forces in the world around us; identifying how gravity and friction affect our lives. We also explore surfaces that have more friction (rough surfaces) or less friction (smooth surfaces). Lastly, your student will learn how forces can start a motion, change the direction of a motion, or stop a motion.
A Few Reminders:FIELD DAY IS COMING! Our field day will be Wednesday, October 30th from 9:00-11:30 a.m. Please click the link below to volunteer! Reading & WritingReading: This week, we will kick off our nonfiction unit by revving up our minds and preparing ourselves for reading nonfiction texts. We will practice previewing text features and understanding how they help us as readers. We will also practice pausing after a text to create little summaries to help us remember important information. We will end the week by discussing main ideas and practicing teaching others about what we've read. At home, please have your child read nonfiction texts paying close attention to the text features. You may ask questions like, "How does this text feature help you as a reader?" "What is the author trying to teach you?" "What do you think this book is going to be about?" Writing: This week in writing, we are beginning our informational writing unit. We will start by choosing a topic that is close to our heart. We will fast draft everything we know about our topic and move into trying out different organizational structures. For example instead of simply listing fact after fact, we will experiment by presenting our information through the four text structures (boxes and bullets, compare and contrast, pros and cons, and cause and effect). Grammar and Conventions: This week, we will practice using correct homophones in sentences and correctly capitalizing proper nouns. Click on the videos below for a review on these concepts! Homophones Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnjke7WERu0 Capitalization Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtSu_QTX8JQ Word Study: This week, we will learn about VCe syllables. Math & Science
Science: This week in science we will be wrapping up our unit on Energy with a test on Tuesday. Students will want to bring home their notebooks to study, and to learn the vocabulary words on the lavender review sheet glued into the science notebook. The four forms of Energy we studied were Mechanical, Light, Sound and Thermal (Heat). They should be able to recognize and identify each of these. On Wednesday, we will start to learn about Force and Motion. Our first lessons will be on recognizing Push and Pull forces. We know the students will enjoy the demonstration we have planned for Wednesday!
